BeZero Carbon and Kayrros collaborate to assess Amazon basin carbon projects using geospatial data and satellite photos.
BeZero Carbon, a global agency for carbon ratings, has joined forces with Kayrros, a French environmental intelligence firm with global operations. As part of the collaboration, Kayrros will map the Amazon basin using geospatial data and satellite photos to assess carbon projects.
BeZero Carbon risk assessments of credits from the area will be informed by satellite-based information on forest structure and carbon produced by Kayrros. BeZero Carbon evaluates carbon credit quality and gives market participants the risk-based tools they need to invest in the projects that will have the biggest positive environmental impacts.
As a result of the new agreement, BeZero Carbon’s evaluations will incorporate Kayrros’ satellite-based mapping of the Amazon basin, adding more high-resolution, real-time data on tree cover and height as well as above-ground biomass to better assess the efficiency of carbon project.
Among other important climate data, Kayrros employs satellite imagery and analytics to create information and insights on wildfire danger, methane emissions, and biodiversity. The UN Environment Program, businesses, investors, and other organizations are then given access to this information. Due to its accurate environmental information, TIME has designated Kayrros as one of the 100 Most Influential Companies in the World.
This collaboration intends to strengthen data sharing within the ecosystem and encourage investment in the most effective climate solutions in light of the carbon markets’ predicted exponential growth in the upcoming years. It is well known that the voluntary carbon market (VCM), which combines climate effect and financial gains, can help hasten the transition to net zero provided that programs for forest protection and afforestation are meticulously tracked and documented.
Support every climate action with data “of the highest possible quality”
“We’re really pleased to be partnering with Kayrros, whose data for the Amazon are at the cutting edge of remote forest monitoring,” said Phil Platts, director of geospatial and earth observation at BeZero Carbon. This agreement will improve our ratings and platform experience when combined with BeZero’s internal models and expertise. The VCM can scale by incorporating a large evidence base into environmental initiatives through data exchange like this.
We’re happy to be forging this cooperation with BeZero Carbon and bring together expertise and experience in our respective sectors to encourage greater openness and accountability to the voluntary carbon market, said Antoine Halff, chief analyst and co-founder of Kayrros.
We can accurately comprehend the performance of carbon credits and convey that understanding in a clear and consistent manner with the use of reliable, independent, verifiable, and empirical data. Both Kayrros and BeZero Carbon are dedicated to making sure that all climate action is supported by the best information and insights.
BeZero Carbon and Kayrros have a wealth of experience in remote sensing, geoanalytics, and AI. They are dedicated to enhancing responsibility and confidence in the VCM by using sound empirical techniques.
